Your dentist is the first person you call when something is wrong with your mouth. However, you might be a little confused on what to do if something happens late at night, on the weekend, or on a holiday.
So, what is a dental emergency exactly?
What Is a Dental Emergency?
Your teeth, gums, jaw, and any other part of your mouth need immediate medical attention during a dental emergency. This can include broken, loosened, missing, or cracked teeth.
Dental emergencies also include trauma to your mouth or tongue, or severe bleeding or pain that won’t stop.
The best thing to remember is that any time you need to save a tooth or a dental concern won’t stop bleeding or is in severe pain, it’s most likely a dental emergency.
What Are More Examples of a Dental Emergency?
If you have any of these conditions, make sure you get to an dentist immediately:
- Abscessed tooth
- Bleeding gums
- Broken crown
- Exposed nerves
- Knocked-out tooth
- Suddenly swollen mouth, jaw, or gums
Then, What Isn’t a Dental Emergency?
While dental emergencies are very common, there are a lot of things that can wait until your regular dentist can see you.
For instance, you only need to see an emergency dentist for a chipped tooth if it’s very painful or it left sharp pieces in your mouth.
If it doesn’t hurt and you can continue with most of your daily activities, you can most likely wait to see your dentist. But, when in doubt, call to find out for sure what you should do!
