Sealants are a great preventative treatment used to protect the teeth against decay on the molar teeth. Molars, located towards the back of the mouth, are the most challenging teeth to keep clean due to their primary function in the chewing process and position in the mouth. Permanent molars appear usually around the ages of 5-7 and premolars (second set) come in between the ages of 11-14. Although it is best to have sealants placed when the molars first come in, it is not uncommon to have our 20+ year old patients elect to have this preventative measure. Ask your hygienist for more information.
